It's a long post but I promise it's worth the read. So I just wanted to come on here and brag about my baby boy for a second because, ever since I adopted him a little under a year ago (he's 1 yrs old in late May and I adopted him on August 19th), he's been the first real and true best friend I've ever had aside from my sisters. He's a golden doodle and,

obviously due to his inherent intelligence, he literally understands what I'm saying to him to the point where I feel like we have a real rapport - something I don't think I've ever felt or noticed with any of my also-amazing family dogs from the past.

So, the following incident happened a few weeks ago and during a very rainy and cold Friday night on campus (which also happens to be located in a major US city). This particular

night, I came home from work and attended to my pup then decided to do my hair for work the next day as I work on Saturdays too. When I was taking
  • 06
my dog out, I went through the garage door which would be the back entrance hidden from the road. A little more background: prior to this, our garage door's mechanism stopped working and we had to manually open and
  • 07
shut it (without being able to lock it from the inside or outside) from November to February. That was already BS considering there are 4 college-aged women who live here and it's not a very safe area where we live - yet our notoriously negligent leasing company didn't rush the replacement motor for the garage whatsoever. But it got

fixed so moving on. Anyways, I came back in through the garage after taking him out and closed it from the button inside. I waited a moment to see it was going down, but I went back inside from the man door before making sure
  • 09
it was fully down since I made sure it was going down. Spoiler alert: the garage did not in fact go down which I would unpleasantly find out very soon. I should also mention in passing that we are unable to lock the man door as it never came wa key to do so. who was home:

me (who, IMPORTANTLY TO THE STORY, resides in the only room on the ground floor of our 3 ish story townhome)

    • My dog who is a MINI golden doodle about medium sized

    • 1 of my 3 roommates whose room is upstairs where she was during all of this My other 2 roommates and their boyfriends who are often over were not there. So anyways. I was doing my

home through the man door, saw my dog and i, then immediately popped back out into the garage. I was obviously freaked out but anxious in doing nothing so I waited a minute before going to the garage to check out the scene. First
  • 15
I noticed the garage was NOT closed and that it had probably rebounded back up due to mechanical issues. Next I noticed 2 passing figures turn the corner from my garage - one of which I believed to be the girl that had just come into the home. Last, I noticed a wet

sweatshirt near the man door. Because of the sweatshirt, I thought that maybe it was just a neighbor trying to close the garage door for us when we didn't know it was open (which has happened before) and that they dropped their sweatshirt. So I made sure to
  • 18
close the garage fully and then peered out the front door afterwards to see if a neighbor was going to approach to explain/for their sweatshirt. No one was there and I didn't want to go outside to check out the situation so I just kinda went on with everything since the coast seemed to be clear and the house was fully locked up anyways. So for

the next 20 or so minutes I was doing the rest of my hair and when I finished, I needed to grab my hairspray which I took to work with me that day. It was still in my work bag in my car. So I
  • 20
took my dog w me to the garage, as I do sometimes, and he immediately b-lined to the only blind spot in the entire 3-car garage, which was between a wall and my roommates big SUV, and just kept barking. when I got
  • 21
everything I needed from my bag I finally checked what he was barking at. When I went over to pet and calm him, I was shocked and beyond scared to see 2 damp people, the girl I saw enter briefly and a guy that was with her, crouching in that blind spot obviously worried they were caught because of my dog. I
  • 22
They kept trying to come closer to me saying they were looking for "nick" and that they just wanted to come in to check. I said no get out and idc if it's raining fire, you don't hide in someone's garage and then say that you were looking for someone you knew who you had just found out (through your previous unwelcomed entry into the home) was not there. That
  • 23
obviously questioning who they were and was going on and I told them to get out. A few things struck me as strange with hindsight. 1st the girl seemed really scared while the boy was more nonchalant in nature.
  • 24
2nd, the guy was doing all the talking. I literally did not hear a word come out of the girl's mouth. 3rd it hit me that I looked in the area they were hiding that whole time before I closed the garage (meaning they ran out before I came to check out the situation, hid while I was
  • 25
looking around, and then snuck back in undetected as the garage was closing because they ran back in through that blind spot. All very bad.
  • 26
screamed as I was caught really off guard and i started to back away. Thankfully, my dog was snarling and protectively barking at them between us which helped to keep their distance from me. I was
  • 27
was only IF they were telling the truth and presumably taking shelter from the rain. Thankfully, my dog wasn't budging either and was keeping the distance between us. I wanted the intruders to leave through the garage but my dog was unleashed and I was afraid he'd run out after them if I opened it.
  • 28
So I had to grab a loose pipe and approach them with it as a weapon if they tried anything, then came close to scoop up my pup to get to the garage button without him getting out. I was successful in this and they did leave. after our police report on the incident was filed, we were contacted by authorities saying that a trafficking ring around the area has used those same tactics in the past by previously
  • 29
moving garage door sensors in applicable homes and that i probably dodged a bullet by getting them out given past incidents around campus. So ya.
  • 30
Point being: I have never been more grateful to have made the decision to adopt my dog as I have every day that I wake up since the incident as I might not be waking up in the safety of my own home if not for my little man. Not only are dogs funny,
  • 31
friendly, silly, and loving beyond what words can begin to describe, but they are also fierce protectors and unfailingly put their lives on the line for their families. I am a dog person through and through and, although I've never doubted that, I'll never make an argument against what a dog can give you as a companion. I love my little man and cannot imagine life without him anymore.
